Dr. Arthur Heinricher, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and a Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), shares his perspective on the difference COACHE has made to his institution--and to his work. As dean, Heinricher is responsible for ensuring the quality and effectiveness of all aspects of the undergraduate experience at WPI, providing leadership and working with the faculty to implement new undergraduate curricular and structural changes.

"COACHE provided a place for faculty voice, a place where they felt that they could say what they needed to say. At the time we were going through some pretty significant changes. It also provided some validation of things we thought we were doing well, so it allowed us to take a little more pride in those and also helped to support them and continue them. They identified places where we’ve long known where we’ve needed to work, but it gave us the last push to actually start working on the problems.

"One of things that that I would probably cite as the most important is that it got me out of day to day, in the weeds, tasks and gives you the opportunity to step out and above, and a connection to a broader community. You learn that your problems are everyone’s problems. It sort of normalizes the struggle. I guess the most important thing is that it gets you out of the day to day weeds and allows you to look a little bit farther and to see a little bit broader.

"The work that COACHE does is important because it’s designed to start discussions, not to end them. This isn’t a research study in which they’re trying to tell you what the answers to the questions are. This is an opportunity to open doors and to begin discussions. The data starts the conversations – it doesn’t end them.
