A waterproof membrane is applied to the cleaned foundation wall to create a continuous barrier that blocks liquid water and bridges small cracks; it’s typically a self-adhered sheet, liquid-applied coating, or a dimpled drainage mat layered over the wall and lapped down onto the footing for a sealed transition. Along the footing, a perforated drain tile (often 4-inch) is placed beside the footing in washed stone with a fabric wrap, allowing groundwater to flow freely into the pipe and away to a sump or daylight, which relieves hydrostatic pressure against the wall.
