Amalgamated Sugar made its formal entry into the motion picture field in 1966. The company had seen a need for a Public Relations film on beet sugar that was geared specifically toward Amalgamated Sugar for many years. Previously, materials consisted primarily of sugarbeet industry information kits from the United States Beet Sugar Association in Washington DC, of which the company is a member.

Amalgamated Sugar decided that a fresh look, tailored directly for the company rather than the beet sugar industry in general, was in order. Amalgamated Sugar contracted with the Brigham Young University motion picture department in Provo, Utah, to write, direct, and produce a new film to fill this gap. In 1966, Brigham Young University not only had the latest sound and motion picture equipment, but they also had a skilled group of motion picture technicians, many of whom had worked for many years at the Walt Disney studios in Burbank, California.

Hence, “Sweet Discovery: The Story of The Sugarbeet” was born, set in the pyramids of Egypt and the sugarbeet fields of Idaho.

We hope you will enjoy this piece of Amalgamated Sugar’s history.
