There is no stronger being in the world than a woman who has made up her mind. I always believed in the truth of this statement, but talking to Meena Ji and learning about her story of grit, determination and resilience only made me believe harder!

It was our 2nd day of being “on the go” when we found ourselves in a small village called Dindori and met superwoman Meena Ji and her husband. And from the moment I started talking to her, she reminded me of my Dadisa (grandmother) – a woman with the same kind of willpower. And once this connection was established, the conversation just flowed.

When her family was drowning in debt of over 23 lacs, and was almost on the brink of selling off their land, it was Meena Ji’s willpower that not only got them through the period but also ensured they became debt free within a few years.

From juggling between being a new mom and working day and night, along with her husband in the khet, to taking the boldest of business decisions without even having a formal education; Meena Ji is an inspiration!

Towards the end of the interview I jokingly told her husband, “Behind every successful man is a woman, but in your case, she is quite ahead of you.” To which he lovingly replied saying, “Woh
hai toh main hun.”
And as I heard him say this, I felt a hope awaken in me… maybe this is what new rural India will look like? Where women will see a world beyond their kitchens, realise their dreams, and learn to walk beside, and not behind, men…?

And in a country as diverse as ours, every human has a story to tell — from a 17th generation Pandit at Tirupati in the south to a Sherpa risking his life and climbing the mountains daily for his family’s sake in the north, from a 100 year old Dadi still running a jewelry stall in the East to the desert princess in the dunes of Jaisalmer in the West.

And so, for the first time ever, Humans of Bombay is going on wheels.
From the dusty streets and the undiscovered lanes, we aim to bring you the extraordinary tales of seemingly ordinary people, and give a voice and platform to those who need to be heard!
