Getting Arrow’s off-leash reliability, reliable. 🙂

Arrow’s owner has done quite a bit of work with him on her own as well as with two other trainers, (he’s fully prong and e-collar trained) but, she’s still struggling with Arrow being easily overstimulated and overly aroused when off-leash to the point of blowing off commands and getting to where he has to be leashed up again for safety.

Arrow is a great dog, and can easily perform all this stuff, but Arrow, and his genetics are pushing back against the training. And while some of this is to be expected, if we’re going to have a bigger, more enjoyable, and safer life for Arrow, we need to be sure there’s solid reliability there.

In this clip I’m working on proofing Recalls and Down-stays at a distance, and then getting Arrow to Recall and Down without being distracted, tuned-out, and either blowing off the command or veeeerrrrry slowly making his way into the Down. Just so you’re clear, he’s at the correction (final) stage, which means he gets a free pass on all commands with no e-collar, just a verbal command. But if he blows it off I repeat the command with a tap correction. As we progress through the video I actually move back one step in our e-collar training sequence when asking for the Down and start to give him a tap with the command the first time I issue the command—we call this the “prompting” stage. This will allow us to fix the hesitation/tuned-out issue, and then move back to the final stage of corrections, where Arrow beats the system and no e-collar is used…once he’s consistent. It will also help chip away at Arrow’s overall off-leash reliability and help pattern him that while the outside world is indeed exciting, it’s also a place that he still needs to offer his best work in. 🙂
