We turned Calico Skies into a Slutter (aka sloop/cutter, solent rig) (Calico Skies Sailing, Ep 74)

This episode opens with Calico Skies completing a short hop over to Brimstone Island. Brimstone is located about 3nm miles south of Vinalhaven and is a geologists dream. The beaches are littered with perfectly round, smooth black stones. We hike to the high point of the island and are treated with beautiful views below as fog rolls over our boats. We are pumped to have three other TTYC members (Delos, Ada, Avalon) joining us here in Brimstone Island.

We wake up the next morning in dense fog as we prepare to move Calico Skies over to Seal Cove seeking 360 degree protection for the next front coming through. Luckily the fog clears as get underway and by the time we arrive to Seal Cove the weather is sunny and calm. We decide to setup our new staysail in the fair, calm weather before the front arrives. We ordered a new staysail from Precision Sails back in November 2019 but due to the pandemic we were unable to take ownership of the sail until late summer. The staysail utilizes our continuous line furler that we have for our code zero. We ordered a second anti torsion cable (AT cable) that we thread through the nifty zipper luff sewn into the staysail. With the staysail rigged we have turned Calico Skies into a slutter 🙃, otherwise known as a sloop/cutter or a solent rig.

With our chores completed we decide its the perfect weather to go a on a paddle to explore Seal Cove. This relaxing spot quickly becomes one of our favorite anchorages in Maine. We observe a pretty blue heron in one of the tidal pools.
