Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Calculating Lunch Break 8-Ball Win Rates using Excel | MrExcel Podcast.

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing how to calculate lunch break 8-ball win rates using Excel. This question was sent in by a viewer on YouTube, and it's a bit of a long one, so bear with me. The scenario is that four people are playing 8-ball during their lunch break and keeping track of who wins and loses on a whiteboard. They want to know if it's possible to calculate the win rate using Excel, and the answer is yes!

To start off, we will set up a table with headings for the date, winner, and loser. As each game is played, we will record the date, winner, and loser. To make sure these headings are always visible, we will use the freeze panes feature. This will allow us to scroll down and still see the headings at the top. We will also turn this table into an expandable table by selecting a cell and using the shortcut CTRL+T. This will make the formulas expand as we add more data.

Now, onto the calculations. We will use the COUNTIF function to count the number of games won by each player. For example, =COUNTIF(Table2[Winner],A2) will count how many times the winner column in our table is equal to ANDY. We will also use the same function to count the total number of games played by each player. To calculate the win rate, we will divide the number of games won by the total number of games played. And just like that, we have our win rates for each player. The best part is, as we add more data, the calculations will automatically update.

Using Excel for this task is much more efficient than using a whiteboard, as it eliminates the need to redo all the calculations every time a new game is played. Plus, it's a great way to practice using Excel for those who are new to the program. So, if you and your colleagues are having a daily 8-ball lunch break tournament, give this method a try and see how it works for you. Four co-workers play 8-ball every day at lunch. They are currently calculating win rate on a white board. Can Excel be used to track the win rate of each player? Although the person is new to Excel, this video goes through a few somewhat advanced topics - Freeze Panes, Ctrl+T tables, Fill Handle, and a pair of COUNTIF functions.
