Djokovic wins 10th Australian Open title & 22nd Grand Slam to equal Nadal.

Revisit all Australian Open champions from 1969 to 2023, from Rod Laver to Novak Djokovic who just won his 10th AO Title in 2023 against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

As the first Grand Slam event of the season, the Australian Open is the big tennis highlight at the start of the year.
However, from 1977 to 1985 the Australian Open were played in december before switching back to January in 1987. (Due to the switches there was no edition in 1986 and two editions in 1977)

In the 2000s Lleyton Hewitt reached the Final but did not manage to become the first Australian to win his home Grand Slam since Mark Edmondson in 1976. Roger Federer won 3 titles but lost the 2009 Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal before winning his 4th title in 2010.
Novak Djokovic then dominated the Australian Open in the 2010s winning the title 3 times in a row in 2011 - 13, including one of the best ever Grand Slam finals in tennis history. Djokovic and Nadal played the longest ever 5 set Grand Slam final in history and would have both deserved the title. By winning again in 2015 and 2016 during his Nole Slam, Djokovic made it 5 titles in 6 years in Melbourne. Nadal, who had lost another final in 2014 against Stan Wawrinka had to be content with being runner up once more in 2017 when Rafa and Roger Federer faced each other in their last Grand Slam final during both of their comeback season. With another win the following season Roger Federer brought his Australian Open titles tally to 6, equalling Djokovic's record. The Serb would however then go on to win the following 3 editions to become only the second man in history to have won a Grand Slam 9 times.

In 2022 Djokovic eventually wasn't able to enter Australia due to his vaccination status. Daniil Medvedev was the new favourite to win the tournament and did manage to be 2:0 sets up against Nadal in the final. But the Spaniard managed one of the best ever comebacks in a Grand Slam final to win the Australian Open 2022 and become the new lone record Grand Slam champion with 21 major titles compared to Federer's and Djokovic's 20.
