At the UBCIC 56th AGA, Chief Francis Laceese–Tŝilhqot'in Nation, highlighted the urgent threat from DFO undermining the Aboriginal right to fish for wild Pacific salmon, a critical source of food security for First Nations across BC.

"We're also opposing, and always have opposed, any and all fish farms of any kind in BC," says Chief Francis Laceese, Tŝilhqot'in Nation. "They're a threat to our survival and everyone here."

For millennia, Indigenous peoples have depended on the health of wild Pacific salmon populations to exercise their right to fish. The consultation process for the Transition Plan must align with the demands of over 120 First Nations across BC, ensuring the preservation of their rights and protection of wild Pacific salmon for future generations.
