WAIAU HEREFORDS - LILBURN VALLEY, WESTERN SOUTHLAND

This week we are on the deep south of the South Island with the King family in Western Southland. Colin & Faye have been breeding traditional horned Herefords for 45 years, with many of their stud sires being traced back to the US & Canada, as well as many of their bloodlines being sent around the world.

For a traditional stud, Colin & his son Darryl are working closely with meat processor, Alliance, to provide accurate carcass yielding information for their clients with the Viascan technology. Data to dates, shows the Waiau Herefords are yielding 14% better than other cattle.

Tony Glynn, of RuralTV.co.nz, was there for the bull sale to meet with a group of Australian Hereford breeders that were at Waiau as part of their New Zealand tour.

We also catch up with local Southland farmer, Dean Edie of Birchwood Station, loyal North Island clients, Ben & Marie Forsyth of Whangamomona and long-time livestock agent, Neil McCrostie.
