Taipei locals, take note. There''s a new farmers'' market in town that sells only organic, traceable food produced at small-scale operations. Until Dec. 26, this market is open Fridays and Saturdays outside the Taipei Neihu Flower Market. Using your phone, you can swipe the QR codes to discover where your food is from. Reporter Stephany Yang has the story.

It’s a cooking demo for pork and Annong sausage, hosted by the Taichung Da’an District Farmers’ Association. The chef pairs sausage with pork, along with local Da’an specialties like green onions, taro, red wine, and brandy. This is a farmers’ market event is held by the Council of Agriculture.

This market specializes in traceable agriculture products. That means each product has its own record of production. Just swipe the QR code on the product, and you’ll be linked to a webpage with details like its producer, its place of origin, its production date, and certification body. The market has some 20 stalls with fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits, processed fishery and livestock products, honey products, egg and milk products, tea and coffee products.

This winged bean is eaten by cutting it into strips or slices, depending on your preference. It can be fried or cooked in soup. It is organic. No chemical fertilizer is used at all.

Back in the day, kids didn’t have candy, so they would pick this. It’s cinnamon leaf. It tastes sweet and spicy.

This market was set up with support from the Agriculture and Food Agency. Since 2013, the agency promoted sales channels that shorten the distance between farm and table.

To promote the concept of “local production, local consumption,” the COA has long promoted sales platforms for farmers. This farmers’ market at Neihu’s flower market is a landmark project for us. In the past, we only had the Taipei Hope Plaza and the Taipei Expo Farmer''s Market. We’re hoping to build this up into a third farmers’ market, and to set it on the path of sustainable growth.

The market will be held every Friday and Saturday until Dec. 26. Shoppers who buy more than NT$500 on any day are eligible for a NT$100 voucher to spend at the farmers’ market.
