Best hikes near Chicago - Fabyan Windmill & Fabyan Japanese Garden (+ a museum!)

If you want to see an authentic 5-story DUTCH WINDMILL, head to Batavia, Illinois to the Fabyan Windmill!

The Fabyan windmill dates back to 1850s and is fully refurbished and operational (though not grinding at this time). The windmill was moved here from a farm in a York Township (now Lombard) and is now part of the Kane County Forest Preserve District. The Fabyan Windmill is a rare sight here in the U.S. and a great place to visit!

👉 FABYAN WINDMILL: 1600 Crissey Avenue, Batavia, IL
(No admission fee - a donation suggested; NOT wheelchair accessible.)

While you're here, consider visiting the FABYAN VILLA MUSEUM and the FABYAN JAPANESE GARDEN as well.

The Fabyan villa was originally home of George and Nelle Fabyan from about 1908 to 1939, now it's a museum. George Fabyan was a millionaire with a thirst for knowledge - expect a lot of neat Asian artifacts in the museum, original furnishings, natural history specimens, and a lot of interesting history.

The Japanese Garden was part of their expansive estate - they even had a private ZOO here! It was the Fabyans that purchased the windmill in 1914 and had it relocated here.
