Our speakers, Christine O'Neill QC and Johanna Boyd discussed:

the statutory framework (including regulations and guidance) as it relates to each type of impact assessment;
best practice when assessing impact; and
the latest equalities caselaw in this area.

Speaker biographies:

Christine O'Neill QC - Christine is Chairman of Brodies LLP and a recognised expert on public and constitutional law issues in Scotland. She is an accredited mediator and a solicitor advocate. Her hallmark is developing strong client relationships in the public and private sectors and providing clear, practical advice. Christine was appointed as Queen's Counsel in 2020.

Christine advises clients on legislation and statutory interpretation, the powers and duties of public bodies including the Scottish Parliament, and freedom of information laws and data protection. She acts for a range of Scottish and UK clients including the Scottish Government, BBC Scotland, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Gambling Commission and the Scottish Qualifications Authority. She is a member of Brodies' Charities & Third Sector Team, advising the Scottish Charity Regulator and a number of charities.

Johanna Boyd - Johanna is a dual-qualified English barrister and Scottish solicitor. Before joining Brodies, Johanna practised at the London Bar for 10 years at a leading public law set of chambers in Gray's Inn Square. Johanna is an Associate in our Government, Regulation and Competition team and has extensive experience of acting for (and against) public authorities and for private clients in Scotland and England.

Johanna understands how public authorities and regulatory bodies function and the complex challenges they face. Johanna is experienced and skilled in a wide range of areas, including equalities and human rights, education (state and independent schools), planning (for developers and local planning authorities), environment, transport, parking, housing, governance and member conduct.
