Rishi Sunak announces general election will be on 4 July 2024

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a general election, focusing on the stability of the economy in his speech, while also attacking Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

In a statement outside Downing Street in the pouring rain, the prime minister said he had met with the King to request the dissolution of parliament.
