TORAN: the name in Hindi for a sacred or honorific gateway

India, home to over a billion people, with a vastly diverse ethnic makeup and over 300 dialects spoken in over 21 officially scheduled languages, presents us with a complex social fabric and artistic milieu that cannot and should not be easily distilled.

The Toran Project presents to viewers a cross-section of work by five artists, both emerging and world-renowned, as well as a selection of prints by a further nineteen artists whose practices reflect a strong contemporary aesthetic, yet speak inextricably of place, time and the diverse scene from which they come. Despite vastly different backgrounds, all the artists in this exhibition are connected by national identity in contact with deep cultural roots while clearly and boldly looking forward. In choosing the works, we sought parallels with our Canadian experience of a vibrant and emergent culture.

The work was gathered and curated by Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects in association with Mumbai based art consultants Jai Danani and Tarana Kubchandani of the prestigious Art and Soul Gallery.

We wish to thank the many artists, dealers, art consultants in Mumbai and especially Sushma Kilachand as well as her extended family, for their guidance, hospitality, and assistance while putting together the many threads of this exhibition.

Concrete Contemporary continues to present, new and groundbreaking contemporary work in a variety of platforms. We hope you will find this exhibition as stimulating to encounter as we have in assembling this stunning work from such a rich culture.
