A glimpse of life playing out in my rain catch pool.
These are all things that I’ve introduced into my rain pool. They are all thriving and growing.
At some point all this water will probably all get used by me and or evaporate into the dry desert air. It is similar to a natural ephemeral pool. An ephemeral pool is a small body of water that exists for short periods after rains, floods, or spring ice/snow melts.
Ephemeral pools usually don’t last long but a surprising amount of creatures have adapted to these periodic chances to thrive. These creatures grow and mature very quickly.
Arid region amphibians utilise these pools for their offspring to grow in. Once big enough, the amphibians move on to dry land to live the rest of their lives.
Surprisingly, several kinds of crustaceans have also adapted to life in these temporary waters. After a small flood event I collected several kinds of very small crustaceans from pools left in a nearby ephemeral creek. These tiny creatures hatch from dry eggs left from previous generations and live their entire lives in a few short weeks. They leave many eggs which will dry out and wait sometimes many years for another water event. When water once again fills the pool, the eggs quickly hatch and the frantic short life cycle repeats itself.
By introducing these things into my rain catch pool, I have turned my pool into another habitat zone!
