Almond agaricus, also known as Almond Portobello, is one of the few fungi that enjoys the heat and humidity. This mushroom can be planted into flower pots and is the perfect way to take advantage of those “end of season” transplant sales! Due to its warm weather loving tendencies this mushroom can be planted up until the end of August and is capable of producing mushrooms in as soon as 3 weeks.

Here’s our latest flower pot recipe:
You will need:
One bag of Almond agaricus sawdust spawn (plants 2 pots)
2 large (16-20 inch diameter) garden pots
Compost
Garden soil
Potting soil
Water to hydrate above substrates

Method:
Gather equal parts of compost, garden soil, and potting soil. You will need enough of each to fill ⅓ of a 5 gallon bucket (or to do the math for you, 1.67 gallon bucket of each). You can either premix your substrate, or, if you do not have a container large enough you can individually mix them (as done in the video above). Hydrate mixture so that you can grab a handful and squeeze it into a ball, but not so hydrated that water drips out when squeezed. Divide in two.

Fill up the bottom half of the pot with equal parts compost, garden soil and potting soil. Separately, crumble half of a 5lb bag of almond agaricus sawdust spawn into the remaining set aside soils. Fill the top half of the pot with the soil/spawn mixture. Only the top half of the pot should have Almond agaricus spawn. Plant with transplants of your choosing. Leafy flowers and vegetables make the best companion plants!

Keep the pot watered per your plants needs. Mycelium should start to mat in 3 weeks. Mushrooms can appear not long after that given the correct conditions!
