Starting Off 2023 With a New Laguna 18–36 Lathe | Wood Turning

After 8 years with my Jet 1642, it finally gave out on me at the beginning of December. It was a fantastic lathe & one where I had tested its absolute limits & it held up to most things I put it through. However, moving forward I wanted something with a bigger capacity & since my shop is limited to 110, I decided to go with the Laguna 1836. I am looking forward to pushing this lathe to its limits as well & one of the very first pieces to turn on it was this natural edge maple bowl with a huge knot hole & figure. It was a good piece to break in the new lathe. I am thrilled with how the piece finished except for the thickness of the bottom wall of the bowl. I would have preferred to keep it more even but the huge hole in the bowl was already making me hesitant & I was unsure how much or little was connected to the tenon of the bowl so I ended up cutting it a little short of how much I normally would have turned away. Either way, I am still happy with the bowl & love the figure & color throughout. So here's to starting 2023 with a new lathe & hopefully many awesome pieces!
