Rishtan is the oldest center of ceramic art in Central Asia, where a unique technology of creating ceramic products was developed. Local ceramics is distinguished by its forms, ornaments and colors and characterized by the use of turquoise, dark blue and brown flowers on a milky-white background.
According to historical information, pottery was founded in Rishtan about a thousand years ago. Rishtan ceramists - kuzagary consider themselves as descendants of the founders of pottery and keepers of old traditions. In the Middle Ages, the art of Rishtan masters reached prominence in many cities and countries lying on the Great Silk Road.
Rishtan potters still use watering "ishkor", which is made from tin, oxides of cobalt, copper or iron and ashes of famous shrubs. Depending on the combination of these additives with the potash contained in the ashes, İshkor glaze becomes ultramarine, turquoise, white, black or brown. None of the ceramic centers in Uzbekistan has such a variety of product forms as in Rishtan. The secret of the stability of the Rishtan school is in the uninterrupted connection of several generations of masters, when the sons share the work of the father.
