Gender Defying Jazz (GDJ) is an annual workshop series, presented by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, that aims to give young women and gender non-conforming vocalists and instrumentalists experience in jazz and improvisation.

The GDJ workshop series is run by Andrea Keller – Australian pianist & composer, and Lecturer in Jazz & Improvisation at the University of Melbourne – and provides an opportunity for young musicians to be part of a community that supports, encourages and nurtures their musical interests and well-being.

The 2020 GDJ online workshops inspired Stories & Songs, a series of specially curated interviews with leading female and gender non-conforming musicians from the world of jazz & improvisation, including; Terri Lyne Carrington, Sandy Evans, Kris Davis, Tia Fuller, Miho Hazama, Linda May Han Oh, Michelle Nicolle, and more. In 2023, GDJ returns for a new series of interviews with artists across the globe.

The same three questions are asked of each interviewee:
1. What have been the pivotal events in your musical journey?
2. What obstacles have you had to overcome during your musical life, and how have you dealt with them?
3. Do you have a motto or a personal philosophy that guides you / What advice would you share with younger musicians?

Each interviewee is asked to nominate a song/album of their own creation that holds particular significance/importance, sharing the reasons why this particular song/album has been recommended for listening, and any other information that is pertinent. Interview list: Sept/Oct/Nov 2023: Flora Carbo (AUS), Cheryl Durongpisitkul (AUS), Ingrid Jenson (CAN/USA), Peggy Lee (CAN/AUS), Selma Savolainen (FIN), Helen Svoboda (AUS), Molly Jones (USA), Liany Mateo (USA), Hilary Geddes (AUS), Jessica Carlton (AUS), Gemma Farrell (AUS), Ellen Kirkwood (AUS), Kate Pass (AUS), Kyrie Anderson (AUS), Zoe Frater (AUS).
