The idea that we are the absolute, the only, the source of perception, that we create everything that we see and feel is both slightly crazy and also true. In attempting to deal with the content of conscious experiences, I thought about calling the retrospective That Dear Old Back Road as it was about returning here to Ireland and about memory and about the world that is conveyed to us through our senses.

Explaining what a painting is ‘about’ is a mistake but it is fair to discuss the areas in which the painting is working. If you have chosen painting as an art you have chosen to work within a language and a particular history. The paintings exist in different layers of reality and different modes so I mix flatness and grids and perspective and ‘concrete’ and ‘realist’ but all these should be see within quotation marks.

Seek out the ghosts
As we live in a flattened world with twenty-four-hour lighting we must seek out the dark corners, the back roads - and here in Ireland is a good place for that - we have more dark corners and therefore more ghosts.
