Avatar: Fire and Ash is an American science fiction epic film directed, produced, and co-written by James Cameron. It is the second of four planned sequels to his film Avatar. It is a direct sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), making it chronologically the third film in the Avatar franchise.
Cameron is producing the film with Jon Landau, with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver originally announced as his co-writers; it was later stated that Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno would take part in the writing process for all of the sequels before being assigned to finish the scripts separately, making the eventual screenplay credits confusing.[2][3][4][5][6] Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald are expected to return from the first two films.[7]
Avatar 3 was scheduled to be released on December 20, 2024, by 20th Century Studios, two years after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in December 2022.
In December 2022, shortly after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, it was revealed that the first cut of Avatar 3 was nine hours long.[33] James Cameron revealed in an interview with 20 Minutes that the film would feature new Na'vi people, called the "Ash people," who would be the film's antagonists.[34]
On June 16, 2023, Disney announced the release date for December 19, 2025.
The first official trailer was released on July 28, 2025.[35]
Avatar 3 is the second of four planned sequels to Avatar; Avatar 3 began filming concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017. Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, and Oona Chaplin have been announced for Avatar 3.
Avatar 4 and 5 are expected to begin filming as soon as Avatar: The Way of Water and 3 are completed. Avatar 4 is expected to be filmed in parts of Estonia due to the parallels Cameron has drawn between the first Avatar film and Estonian culture.[36]
Although the last two sequels have been announced, Cameron stated in a November 26, 2017, interview: "Let's face it, if Avatar: The Way of Water and 3 don't make enough money, there won't be a 4 and 5." Cast member David Thewlis later confirmed in February 2018, stating that "they're making 2 and 3, they'll see if people will see them, and then they'll make 4 and 5."[26][27]
On June 16, 2023, Disney announced the release dates for both Avatar 3 and the last two installments:[37]
Avatar 3 on December 19, 2025.
Avatar 4 on December 21, 2029.
Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031.
