Britain's membership of the European Union has made the country more open, more dynamic and stronger, the Bank of England Governor has said.
In a speech likely to be seized upon as ammunition for the "stay" side in the UK's forthcoming referendum on EU membership, Mark Carney said that Britain had benefitted from being a part of the Union.
However, he added that there were risks that EU financial regulations could undermine the Bank's ability to manage the banking system in future.
Talking in Oxford, Mr Carney said: "To the extent it increases economic and financial openness, EU membership reinforces the dynamism of the UK economy.
"A more dynamic economy is more resilient to shocks, can grow more rapidly without generating inflationary pressure or creating risks to financial stability, and can also be associated with more effective competition."
The Governor, who also made a speech about the risks of Scottish independence early on in last year's referendum campaign, said he did not want to take sides in the EU debate, or to try to assess the costs or benefits of 'Brexit'. However, many of his comments dwelt on the benefits of membership.
He said: "In some respects, the UK is the leading beneficiary of the famous Four Freedoms first set out in the 1957 Treaty of Rome.
