There is a nationwide shortage of rheumatologists; this shortage is even more acute in the southeastern United States, where there is only one rheumatologist for every 60,000 population. As a result, many patients have to travel hours to the closest rheumatologist, and quite often the waiting time can be several months. A number of the reasons for referral might not need intervention by the rheumatologist; unfortunately, many primary care providers have limited training in rheumatologic disease.
