WHAT HAPPENED After 60,000 km? KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Engine Rebuild & Camshaft Issue Analysis

A few months ago, we removed the engine from a 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S and delivered it to an experienced specialist to assess possible damage and wear. Peter Forster, the owner of FP Engineering GmbH, will show us how the rebuilt engine undergoes a test cycle on their custom test bench and will evaluate the replaced parts.

FP Engineering GmbH is one of the leading specialists in Germany for assessing & rebuilding KTM engines during the initial 2-year manufacturer warranty period. Peter and his team offer a wide range of services, including performance measurements and tuning for motorcycle and car engines. They have also become the go-to place for old Husqvarna motorcycle parts and sell a variety of motorcycles.

Due to my own engine troubles last year, I became aware of the camshaft issues that some riders with 790 / 890 engines were experiencing. I had the opportunity to ask Peter about his experience with this particular issue.

As for the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, there is an entire video dedicated to the removal of this engine. The engine's journey has a backstory – plagued by issues from overfilled engine oil by the dealer, which eventually led to concerning noises. With just over 60,000 km on the odometer, we removed the engine and delivered it to Peter and his team.

The 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is one of motorcycles from Stephan’s rental fleet, which after 3 years of use will be retired from rental pool. Stephan’s offers BMW, KTM and as of this year Honda motorcycles for rental. The motorcycles are extremely well maintained and are typically 0-3 years old.
