We tend to get caught up with details and small forms whenever we draw but its important to focus on the larger, simpler, underlying mass that dominates and dictates the overall structure and value pattern. This applies if you draw the head, figure, animals, plants or flowers and virtually any other subject. Focus your attention on what is dominant.

This drawing tutorial presents the instruction using pencil and pen and ink but this principle applies to any other drawing or painting medium.
