Exploring White Sands National Monument New Mexico is a great way to spend the day! White Sands National Park is 53 miles east from Las Cruces New Mexico. Surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range, is nearly 250 square miles of white sand dunes, created over thousands of years by wind erosion of of the ancient Gypsum crystals west of the dunes. The White Sands Dunes are home to many varieties of wildlife. In ancient days, creatures such as the Giant Ground Sloth, very LARGE and CREEPY animals also made this amazing white sand desert their home as well as others like Mammoth, ancient camels, dire wolves, and saber-toothed cats, all once crossed the Tularosa Basin where the white sands dunes lie today. Trace fossils abound in the area!
