STORYLINE:
New Year's Day in North Korea brought a new speech from the country's current leader Kim Jong Un, and displays of routine obeisance to past leaders Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung.
But apart from official obligations, it is a day off and people do get to spend time with their families.
The routines of laying flowers and bowing to the statues and portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il that dot the country is the same on New Year's Day as on all other major public holidays and anniversaries.
And just like these shows of reverence, in any public comment, North Koreans are careful to use safe and familiar phrases expressing their loyalty to their leaders.
One slight difference from the past few years – Kim Jong Un's New Year's Day speech came out on state TV at midday local time (0330 GMT), instead of the start of the day.
Kim Jong Un resumed Kim Il Sung's tradition of making a New Year's Address.
Kim Jong Il did not make public speeches.
During his years in charge, the New Year's Address was replaced with a "New Year's Editorial" that appeared in North Korea's three main newspapers.
Another change to recent routine - the New Year's Eve fireworks that have lit up the night sky over central Pyongyang in the past few years didn't happen on Thursday.
Instead, a firework show is expected over the Taedong River that runs through Pyongyang on Friday night at 9pm (1230GMT).
