Volkswagen is marking two decades of its high-performance hot hatch with the pricey and strictly-limited VW Golf R 20 Years, the most powerful four-cylinder Golf ever.

The 20 Years special-edition packs a 245kW/420Nm version of the German car-maker’s famous EA888 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, plus a host of extras that are either optional or unavailable on the standard Golf R.

The catch is just 50 examples are coming to Australia (where all of them will be sold by the time you read this) and the admission price is a cool $77,490 plus ORCs, so is the 20 Years really worth $8500 more than the standard Golf R and $22,000 more than the Golf GTI?
