Malaysia’s worst flooding in decades has killed a total of 48 people as of December 27, 2021. Five people are still missing and more than 22,000 are living in evacuation centres after heavy rains on December 17 and 18 led to floods.

Flooding is common during the monsoon season, but the Malaysia government has been criticised for its lacklustre disaster prevention, slow response and publicity stunts where officials visited and posed at clean-up sites.The country’s ministry of environment said it has been seeking US$3 million from the UN Green Climate Fund for a national plan to adapt to climate change amid the deadly floods.
