On one of the year's most windy days, I bundled myself up and braced for the wind. This island in the middle of the Southern Ocean is one of the most remote places on earth, and is totally exposed to the storms circling the bottom of our world. The recording captures the wind as it moves through the tussocks and around the building, creating a natural, sheltered perspective.

The Sub-Antarctic Island is perpetually inhabited by Southern Elephant Seals, which you may occasionally hear in the distance as their vocalisations get carried by the wind. This is a true Macquarie Island ambience, uninterrupted, raw and recorded exactly as it was experienced.
