Ah yes. The boss that many have deemed one of the most unfair fights in all of Final Fantasy II: The Lamia Queen.

She is actually the Princess in disguise at this point. You face her after you complete the job in Deist. If there is any equipment you feel that will benefit Gordon in Palmecia, you should swap out of Leila before facing this boss.

This also happens to be my favorite audio track in this game.

Lamia Queen is tricky. Not only is she your first Rank 7 fight but she has quite the bag of tricks that make a lot of players either get frustrated or powerlevel so they don't have to worry about this. Better get used to it now cause these monsters are regulars at Pandaemonium.

First off, her standard attack carries a Sleep effect, which can last any number of turns. The damage is also pretty extensive. She can also cast Entice 9 and attempt to Confuse party members so they wail on each other. For defense, she can cast Blink 16 on herself, which pretty much renders her impossible to hit unless you maxed out your weapon proficiencies.

What people don't realize is that you can visit the town of Mysidia in the bottom left corner of the World Map. Here, you can purchase 2 defense spells that can make this fight a whole lot simpler: Wall and Barrier. Wall will enhance your Magic Defense while Barrier will apply resistance to certain schools of Magic as it's level increases.

While you stack on Protect and Blink, cast Barrier and Wall along with them. With both spells at level 3 and enough Magic Defense, you can nullify Entice 9 so your party won't attack each other. Barrier however will not be able to block the Sleep effect from the attack, but enough Magic Defense from Wall can allow you to.

Because of the threat of Blink 16 and especially for those who didn't pay a visit to Mysidia, you are better off bombing this boss with Magic. Augmented attacks may spell your doom if they attack your own people. Use your strongest attack spells. If you got any high level status effect spells (Level 8 or better), cast them as she is not immune to any of the schools. Good choices are Curse (cuts her attack damage in half), Stop/Hold/Sleep (pacifies her) or Silence (prevents her from Blinking or Enticing). If you got a instant kill at Level 8 or higher, you can use those too.

Make sure you have multiple party members with Cure and at least 2 party members with Basuna at Level 4 or better to remove the Sleep. You will need Basuna 6 to remove Confusion.

REWARDS
=========
Aside from the 15k Gil, there is an assortment of items that can serve you well if you manage to get any 1 of them. Try to aim for the Protect Ring or Ribbon as they are the most useful of the items to your cause.

I wouldn't recommend using this boss to level up. Although she is Rank 7, she can be an incredible annoyance for low level parties, plus the threat of Confusion.

Attack - Standard attack against 1 party member. Can inflict Sleep. High magic defense blocks Sleep, Blink and Protect can reduce damage.
Entice 9 - Confuses a party member. High magic resistance or Barrier Level 3 can nullify.
Blink 16 - Increases evasion from physical attacks. Makes it difficult to high boss properly. Use magic attacks instead or stop her from casting this by paralysis, sleep or kill her.
