No question, HDBeenDope is serious about hip-hop, but likes to have a little fun along the way. That’s why the camera focuses on the fingers of a Mariachi fiddler at the start of the “ReallyMite” video that arrived last week. And that’s why the NYC rapper messes with the Mexican troupe and dresses up as a paper boy on a bike through the clip. Inventive visuals are part of the HDBD package. And that’s why he takes a different route than some of the competition. It’s not every MC that opens for Portugal the Man and lands a track on EA Sports Madden 21. Fans have been smitten with him ever since his ‘Pheace Be the Journey’ debut dropped in 2016, and their numbers jumped greatly when 2019's “BYRD” hit and took HD’s rep to wider circles. On that ferocious gem, he spit hard and was candid about the self-doubt that occasionally plagues us all. These days the Brooklyn hero is working with producer Earl On the Beat; “ReallyMite” and “Wrist” are the first two tracks from his ‘Side A: The Preface’ project, which nominally portends more heat to come. The speed and agility of his flow on this latest work speaks for itself – especially in these Ctrl performances. Bars, baby, bars.
