COVID cases in the UK have risen by 33,470 today in the biggest ever 24-hour leap.

The figure smashes the previous record total of 26,688 coronavirus cases on October 21.

The dramatic surge comes a day after the UK became the first country in Europe to pass 50,000 coronavirus deaths.

Boris Johnson said "we mourn everybody who's gone" as Britain hit the grim milestone after 595 more deaths were recorded yesterday.

Today's Covid death toll is yet to be released and it is unclear what has triggered the sudden spike in cases.

Last Thursday, the first day of England's second lockdown, saw 24,141 new cases of coronavirus across Britain.

But cases have shot up by 33,470 in the last 24 hours, according to official Government figures.

This is the highest ever single-day jump in the number of people infected with the virus since the pandemic began.

Earlier today, it was claimed that Britain's coronavirus R rate is finally back below 1, as the crucial value is now estimated to be at 0.9 across the country.

But there are 14,030 patients in hospital in the UK, with 1,268 on ventilators.
