Yu Xuanji (~844-868) was a Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty that is often referred to as being born in the wrong era. Even from a young age she was known for her literary talents. Falling for scholar Li Yi she willingly married him as a 'lesser wife.' Li Yi's first wife however extremely disliked her and Yi took her away to a Daoist temple 'temporarily' and promised to return for her. He never did.

Li Yi's abandonment caused Yu Xuanji to become disillusioned with the society that she lived in which men were in control of her life. She realised that men could not be trusted, and that she could give herself freedom and independence. She became a Daoist nun and the temple became a sanctuary for her and other women. At age 24 (approximation) she was executed for murder. It is speculated that her crime was fabricated and did not warrant execution.

Currently, only one volume of Yu Xuanji's poetry remains. Much of what we have of her life is what her contemporaries wrote of her, who often comment on her prowess in poetry but nevertheless degrade her for her pomiscuity. Her story is often told as a tragedy, but in this song, we wanted to place her in a new dimension. Perhaps, in other life, Yu Xuanji is free.

人说扬州远 误了卿卿 红泪悬悬
They say that Yangzhou is far, further than how you left the tears on my face
亦有言：“自古多情损少年”
So they say that love breaks the young
吟哦半生 恍若酩酊
It is as if I have just awakened
大梦不觉
From a half-life of foley
此去经年 春秋今又是 换了人间
The days gone by do not return, turning of the seasons unceasing

何人忽来扣柴关 只为相附攀
So what does it mean for someone to return
到底意阑珊
Only to take again from me?
“余一介女冠 自视缺然 不如向前山”

此番谪尘世 最不甘 未为男
In this life I regret that I was not born a man
才与情 随云散

诗书坐绕身 前尘事 难俱陈
Surrounded by papers and books, how do I begin to tell my story?

By forfeiting my past I release my regrets
来生 且陶陶 乐尽我天真
In my next life I wish to be happy and naive

见怪不怪 其怪自败

Letting go of everything, I am free

往事千百载 独坐兰台
The events of past and future no longer concern me
