On February 24, 2022, Russian forces invaded Ukraine. Thousands of people have lost their lives, millions are on the run – cities are bombed mercilessly and attacks are directed against civilian facilities and the population. Cities like Kharkiv or Mariupol are besieged, starved and razed to the ground.
Putin, the Russian government and propaganda imbue the war against Ukraine with historical legitimations, which many considered outdated, even overcome since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The discussion will therefore focus on historical narratives that have been used repeatedly in recent decades to question the sovereignty and statehood of other countries and to justify wars against and within these states.
