Today I’m painting a scruffy little pup in watercolor as a commissioned gift for one of my husband’s coworkers. I don’t know much about this dog personally, but his wiry fur and scruffy personality made him such a fun challenge to paint.

The original reference photo included a tennis ball, but instead of painting it directly, I used it as inspiration for the background color. I love using greens and teals for dogs with coats like his! It gives the painting a vibrant contrast and helps the dog stand out.

This portrait was painted on 7x10 cold press watercolor paper. Cold press has a soft texture that works especially well for dogs with longer or scruffier coats, since the texture of the paper adds to the feel of the fur. For the final touches, I used Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White to bring out all those wiry strands, finished with a few splatters for movement, and signed my initials to complete the piece.
