HOW TO GET TO CRADLE MOUNTAIN SUMMIT?

Located at the northern end of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Cradle Mountain is about 1.5 hours drive from Devonport and 2.5 hours drive from Launceston via Sheffield. The Cradle Summit can be accessed from either the Ronny Creek or Dove Lake car parks. In this video, we left our vehicle at the Ronny Creek car park and followed the Overland Track past Crater Lake to Marions Lookout. We next crossed Cradle Plateau and had a quick stop at Kitchen Hut then made our way to the Summit. On the way back, we took a turn into Face Track, made a side trip to Lake Rodway and returned to Dove Lake carpark via Hansons Peak. We did more or less 30km on foot in total that day – this sounds much longer than a normal Cradle Summit circuit (which is less than 15km estimated) but we made some extra kilometres by doing a side trip to Lake Rodway, plus I had to go back and forth to collect the camera.

Most people would start directly from Dove Lake car park and either follow the anti-clockwise Dove Lake circuit to Lake Wilks track then come back via Marions Lookout; or take a longer route up to the Summit through the Rodway track, past Hansons Peak and return also via Marions Lookout. You can be creative as there are several ways to the summit of the picturesque Cradle Mountain.

HOW TO ACCESS CRADLE MOUNTAIN?

The Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre is the departure point for the shuttle bus to Dove Lake. They have bus running 7 days week between 8am – 6pm in the summer period and 9am – 5pm in the winter period. Private vehicle access in the park is not permitted during shuttle bus operating times. On that day, we made it to the Ronny car park before 8am and if you would like to take your own car to one of the car parks, please consider an early start accordingly. Bus tickets are included in the purchase of your Parks Pass. Simply present your valid Parks Pass at the Centre to get tickets. One that note, due to the construction of the new Dove Lake viewing shelter from April 2020 to March 2022, there is no private vehicle access past the Ronny Creek car park or to Dove Lake. That’s part of the reasons why we decided to start from the Ronny Creek car park.

WHAT IS THE CRADLE MOUNTAIN SUMMIT TRAIL LIKE?

The track overall is very clear and well maintained. Most of the parts are under boardwalk with clear signages basically found at every trail junction. The difficulty grade could range from moderate to challenging as walkers will face some steep climbs, especially a steep scramble to the summit. I would say our route, which is following Overland Track from the Ronny car park, might be the easiest access to the top of Cradle Mountain. All the routes will lead to the Kitchen Hut eventually where you start the ascent to the summit – from this point onward you might need previous bushwalking experience or at least (as recommended) some experienced hikers to accompany to make it to the top. On our way back, we did meet a couple who decided to turn around halfway to the summit. With all those being said, this is one of the most picturesque hikes I’ve done in my life. Every time you stop and turn around, there is a picture-postcard view laying in front of you. It’s highly recommended to anyone who hasn’t done this walk – I am so happy that I finally ticked this off and would come back there right tomorrow and do it all over again; perhaps the next time will be when we are doing the whole Overland Track or at least the magnificent Barn Bluff. We were so lucky to have such a nice weather to start with, even though the rain did come in the afternoon, we had a great time enjoy the views on the summit as you can see in the video – a flat calm day with no wind that made everything so perfect. On that note, weather conditions in alpine areas like Cradle Mountain can change quickly and frequently, so make sure you are clothed and prepared for any possibility and follow all walker safety.
