Early in February 2025 MassDOT announced the finalized location where the Palmer, MA train station will be built. The station, to be built as part of MassDOT’s Compass Rail, also known as East-West Rail and the Inland Route, will be brand new at a new location away from the historic station building at the Palmer diamond. The site chosen is at 1199 S. Main St. right by the Palmer Yard. The project would involve constructing a station track, high level platform, walkways, and a parking lot. This site was chosen as there is enough room to accommodate what infrastructure is needed while costing less than other locations. The East West Rail Project is a MassDOT rail project that would add additional passenger trains across the Boston & Albany Line. Currently Amtrak runs the Lake Shore Limited train to/from Boston over the route today and MBTA service runs as far as Worcester.

Initially the Inland Route section from Boston to Springfield is planned to open 2029 after two years of construction starting in 2027. Two round trip passenger trains would be added as part of this initial phase. Future expansions to the west would follow after, ultimately reaching Pittsfield and Albany. I plan to do several future videos on East-West rail so stay tuned for that.

CSX, Amtrak, Mass Central, and New England Central can all be seen at location this regularly. These scenes were shot at the future station site in 2024 including CSX, Mass Central, and Amtrak.
