The Supreme Court has granted the central government four weeks to respond to a plea seeking the immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The direction came from a bench headed by Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, during a hearing on Thursday.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the government is in talks with the Jammu and Kashmir administration regarding the matter. He described this consultative process as the “correct approach,” but also pointed out that security concerns, such as the recent attack in Pahalgam, must be taken into account before any decision is made.
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the petitioners, argued that such incidents occurred “under the watch of the central government,” and should not delay the restoration process.
Tomorrow, they can convert Uttar Pradesh into a UT since it shares a border with Nepal, or convert Tamil Nadu into a UT,” the advocate said, pointing to the need to protect India’s federal structure, the plea stated.
