Very Few Americans Know How the U.S. Took Over Texas

In the mid-1800s, Mexico had just gained independence from Spain and faced significant economic challenges. To stimulate its struggling economy, the Mexican government encouraged American settlers to move into its northern territories, particularly Texas.

However, many of these settlers brought enslaved people with them, despite the fact that slavery was illegal in Mexico. Outraged by this violation of their laws, the Mexican government deployed military forces to regain control. But in 1836, the settlers defeated the Mexican army and declared the establishment of the Republic of Texas.

While Mexico reluctantly acknowledged Texas' independence, the two nations remained at odds over the exact location of the border. Tensions escalated when the United States annexed Texas in 1845 and sent troops into the disputed region. This provocation ultimately ignited the Mexican-American War, a conflict that further reshaped the map of North America.
