Created over 2200 years ago, the Dying Gaul is an ancient Roman marble statue, and is believed to be a copy of a lost Greek bronze attributed to Epigonus, a court sculptor of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon. The original was likely commissioned by Attalus I around 230–220 BC to commemorate his victory over the Galatians of Anatolia. The statue depicts a wounded Galatian warrior, identified by his Celtic hairstyle, moustache, and neck torc, slumped in defeat beside his shield and carnyx (Gallic war trumpet). It measures 93 × 186 × 89 cm (3 ft 1 in × 6 ft 1 in × 2 ft 11 in).

This artifact is now housed at the Capitoline Museums in Rome, Italy. It was rediscovered in the early 17th century during excavations for the Villa Ludovisi, it was recorded in 1623 and later acquired for the Capitoline collections under Pope Clement XII. The statue was taken to Paris by Napoleon’s forces under the Treaty of Tolentino, and was displayed in the Louvre until 1816, when it was returned to Rome.
