St. Roch Market, originally known as Washington Market, opened on May 1, 1875, in New Orleans. It was built on what is now St. Roch Avenue, then called Washington Avenue, in the St. Roch neighborhood.

The market's history is intertwined with the development of the St. Roch neighborhood, which was once part of the "New Marigny" area.

Here's a more detailed look at the market's history:
Early Days:

The market began as an open-air market under a franchise agreement with Joseph Nocas Raymond. It was strategically placed on Washington Avenue, later renamed St. Roch Avenue in honor of the nearby St. Roch Cemetery.

1838 Market:
The original Washington Market was built in 1838 in what is now the Bywater neighborhood and later repurposed as a vagrant facility.

Neighborhood Growth:
The St. Roch neighborhood thrived, particularly after a Yellow Fever epidemic where Father Peter Leonard Thevis supported the community, leading to the renaming of the area and the market in honor of Saint Roch, the patron saint of incurable diseases.

1930s Renovation:
The market underwent significant renovations in the 1930s, including the installation of refrigeration and an enclosed space, thanks to the Works Progress Administration. This allowed for longer operating hours for vendors.

Post-Katrina:
Hurricane Katrina caused substantial damage in 2005, and the market remained closed for several years.

Recent Transformation:
In 2015, after extensive renovations, the market reopened as a modern food hall, featuring a diverse array of vendors offering local and international cuisine.
