Rahul Gandhi Disqualified As MP After Conviction In Defamation Case | Disqualification of MP | UPSC

Rahul Gandhi (a Congress Party leader) has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha as the Member of Parliament (MP), a day after he was convicted in a defamation case by a Surat court. He was held guilty under under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced to two years in jail in the Modi Surname defamation case. This criminal defamation on Rahul Gandhi had triggered the process of his disqualification as an MP. Now, a Lok Sabha Secretariat Notice has made it clear that Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from the Lower House from March 23, the date of his conviction.

Rahul Gandhi will have to appeal to a higher court in order to get his conviction stayed.
