Introduction
Is the brand new Roland RD-08 the best budget stage piano ever? No similarly priced offering from Yamaha, Korg, Casio, or Kawai does what the RD-08 does, at the level that it does it.
If you are a professional or semi-professional musician, here are 4 reasons to look at the RD-08.

A Quartet of Reasons
Sound Generation
The RD-08 contains the full ZEN-Core synthesis sound engine, the same chipset as the RD-88, Fantom-8, and Fantom-08, with the exception that it has three zones which is fewer than the Fantom products. On a patch-by-patch basis, the offering is identical, with over 3,000 internal tones. It also has the SuperNATURAL Piano and SuperNATURAL E.Piano.

The ZEN-Core sound engine takes four partials and applies a full synthesis chain to it, including oscillators, wave sources, envelope control, and a myriad of other options, to create a highly dynamic set of tones. While there are fewer editing options, the fundamental architecture remains the same.
If you find a few hundred sounds you love, you’ll have super lush and highly textured tones.
Along with the ZEN-Core engine, a full effects suite is available; multi-effects on the zone, insert effects on the scene, and master effects. The RD-08 has 100 preset slots in which you can save your edited sounds.

In terms of delivering professional sound with lots of flexibility with tons of thickness and texture, the RD-08 delivers quite the punch for the price.

Speakers
The RD-08 has four well-tuned and balanced speakers utilizing 12 watts of power; two upward-facing tweeters and two downward-facing main speakers that provide more body and depth, and the amount of sound produced is unbelievable. There isn’t an unreasonable amount of highs or lows, and the sound is super clear.
The RD-08 filled our 250 to 300 square foot room with sound.

Optional USB Audio
By making the USB Audio Interface optional, a first in the industry, Roland has been able to keep the price low. For those who want the USB Audio Interface, a lifetime subscription can be purchased and downloaded from the Roland Cloud which will enable the built-in interface.

Onboard Functionality
While not having the same DAW integration abilities due to the stripped-down interface, the internal OS and onboard functionality are virtually the same as the RD-88. There are fewer faders, no tone category access buttons, and the RD-08 is missing 300 preset slots that the RD-88 has, but in terms of the number of tones, editable menu accessibility, the effects, the three layer controls, the song playback functionality, the line and mic inputs, and the two assignable wheel controllers, it is hard to see any difference in specs and overall capability between the RD-08 and the RD-88.

Playing the RD-08
Sound Selection and Action
By default, the tone categories are selecting presets, or scenes, rather than individual tones. Within those scenes, there are three zones that can be edited, and after selecting a zone and tapping Enter, you can access the 3,000 available tones.
Like many other Roland products in this category, the RD-08 comes with the PHA-4 action that provides an authentic dynamic speed and weighting, particularly for those with acoustic piano experience.

Bluetooth
Roland does not include Bluetooth radio functionality on any of its professional-level products, such as the RD-08, RD-88, and Fantom series, because if you are dependent on a connection to a computer or tablet in a professional setting, you do not want to risk the instability of a Bluetooth connection.

Pedals
The RPU-3 triple pedal provides additional controls for the various effects settings.

Stu’s Thoughts
With all of this in mind, Roland has absolutely delivered a smashing value with the new RD-08.
