Surah Al-Hijr, verse 16, stayed in my mind for a long time. Its translation is:
"And We have placed constellations in the sky and made it beautiful for those who
look at it."
But which constellations?
Whenever I asked people this question, some casually said "stars" and moved on,
others gave different answers.
In December 1990, a powerful telescope was launched into space, known as the
Hubble Space Telescope, with the mission of capturing images of the farthest
regions of space.
In 1995, Hubble was focused on a seemingly empty region of space called
Serpens, located westward from Pakistan, where very few stars are visible
On April 1, 1995, Hubble captured an image so breathtaking that it was included
among the ten most beautiful images of the universe. Its beauty was so
extraordinary that it was re-captured with advanced cameras in 2011 and again in
2014.
The image revealed three massive towering pillars, so immense that even light
-traveling at its fastest speed-takes five years to travel from their base to their
peak. And these structures are so far away that their light takes 7,000 years to
reach us.
What's even more astonishing is that Dr. Jeff Hester of Arizona State University
gave these pillars a remarkable name-the same name by which they are still
known today:
"The Pillars of Creation."
After reading this verse and learning about these pillars, I fell silent for a long time.
The exact words of the Qur'an--echoing centuries later in modern science. The
same Qur'anic description of beauty now appearing in major scientific journals as
"the most decorated wonders of the universe."
So much is still left to learn. So many mysteries remain hidden.
Who is showing us all this? Who is teaching us? Who guided our eyes to these
"pillars"?
And one answer keeps coming to mind:
"He taught humanity what it did not know."
(Surah Al-'Alaq, Verse 5)
