Step 1: Use the Signature feature in your iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. and add in a message that announces the upcoming change.

Step 2: Use http://unroll.me to find out what mailing lists you DO want to continue to receive. Of these, you'll ultimately break them all down into two groups: newsletters & e-blasts and websites where you have an account. Any websites that have an account will need to be updated to reflect your new e-mail address.

Step 3: Transfer all your old email from the old account into the new account. You really need either Apple Mail or Outlook to do this (or another 3rd party equivalent). Keep in mind that when you drag and drop your files from one account to the other, that it will take time to make this change. Do not rush it!

Step 4: Migrate your contacts, calendars, and any other data that may be stored inside your old address. Once again, this will require a computer. Export from the old account and import it into the new account.

Step 5: Let your contacts know via e-blast of your new address. NOTE: you have a limit as to how many e-mails you can send in one day. Typically this is between 200-800.

Step 7: Enable auto-forwarding on your old account. You'll want to keep it this way for likely 3-6 months. This just allows you to continue to receive e-mail sent to the old account as your contacts learn to switch your contact information over.

Step 8: After you feel comfortable with the transition, turn off auto-forward and turn on auto-reply with some sort of message to the sender that informs them that the account has been closed.
