An eight-judge Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan resumes hearing today on a series of petitions challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment — a controversial reform that has reshaped the judiciary’s structure and authority.

The 26th Amendment, passed by both houses of parliament in October 2024, removed the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers, limited the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s tenure to three years, and created a Special Parliamentary Committee to appoint the CJP from the three most senior judges.

In today’s hearing, the very Constitutional Bench formed under this amendment is reviewing its legality — raising critical questions about judicial independence, separation of powers, and constitutional authority.
