Contested Curriculum: LGBTQ History Goes to School

Author Don Romesburg discusses his account of the history of LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 history education in the United States, highlighting the battle to pass California's 2011 FAIR Education Act, the first statewide mandate related to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ history and a model for other states. As part of a moderated conversation with Anne Valk, Executive Director of the ASHP and Professor of History at the Graduate Center, Romesburg will talk about his role in the movement to pass and then implement the FAIR Act, what lessons schools and educators can learn from struggles for LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum, and the importance of LGBTQ+ history education in our current political environment.
