Unlike conventional ecommerce, the social commerce model leverages the community leader’s, influencer’s or KOL’s connections to generate sales by marketing directly to their friends and family. Typically, these community leaders or resellers as they are often referred to, consolidate orders from their community or neighborhood to secure bulk discounts directly from suppliers. Through social platforms or a platform app, resellers bulk-order inventory at wholesale prices before re-distributing to their networks at a mark-up, though in some cases, resellers may also earn a percentage commission.

Globally, social commerce is on the path to becoming a US$1.2 trillion industry by 2025, with the biggest gains being made in Brazil and India. The $2-3Bn social commerce market in India today is estimated to hit US$70 billion in value by 2030, empowering around 40 million small entrepreneurs.
